He studied advertising and graphic design at St. Luc High School of Applied Arts in Ghent, Belgium. Along with hundreds of contributions to illustrations magazines, he has also published more than 130 books, many of which have been published in several European countries, Taiwan, China, Korea and Australia. On his personal website www.klaas.be, you will find a complete bibliography, an overview of translated titles, awards, and a large portfolio. In 1998, a selection of his work was included in the exhibition Giganti Fiamminghi / Illustrators from Flanders at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. In 2001 he became the first Flemish illustrator to win a Bologna Ragazzi Award for Ozewiezewoze, a collection of a hundred classic children's songs in a book he created and illustrated. In the same competition he was also awarded a Bologna Ragazzi Special Mention for JOT, a children’s book he conceived, wrote and illustrated. In 2004 he was the first Flemish illustrator to be part of the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition Jury. Klaas Verplancke won the most important illustration award in Flanders, The Golden Peacock, in 2003. Also in 2003, he won a «Vlag en Wimpel», a bronze medal in the main illustration competition in the Netherlands and he was awarded the first Illustrale-award for his complete oeuvre. His work was also selected and nominated for several awards and exhibitions in Flanders, the Netherlands and Germany. He taught illustration and design for more than six years at the Graphic Department of Het Vormingsinstituut, an adult education institute in Bruges and is regularly invited to sit on juries for competitions and final examinations in art schools. Klaas Verplancke regularly gives lectures at teacher training colleges, at the Universities and High Schools of Antwerp, Ghent and Louvain. He writes articles and picture-book reviews in Leesidee, the leading professional children’s book magazine published in Flanders and the Netherlands. Verplancke is also the founder of the VIC, an organisation that offers young illustrators and students information, advice and guidance on working as a professional illustrator. In 2000, Klaas Verplancke organised a retrospective exhibition and auction of work from more than 60 important Flemish children’s book illustrators. bibliografie/bibliography
